Rose City Rising
History
Extending off the Godot tutorial hosted by p:ear's Wired Wed crew in 2025, where Panic! hosted us in their office. Ideas were sparked on what kind of game we would design with our. We set off to make a level inspired by p:ear's skate program. A team of creatives were assembled and we set out to have a demo for the Winter's Lights Festival in 2026.

About
Rose City Rising is a community-built 16-bit skate game that transforms digital play into a platform for youth learning, social art, and neighborhood storytelling.

Created in PDX, the project brings together youth creators, mentors, nonprofits, and various experts to co-design playable levels that reflect real places, local culture, and community voices. Assets are hand-drawn, soundtracks are original, and every level is shaped through collaboration.

Beyond the game itself, Rose City Rising operates as a paid learning pilot program. Youth participants gain hands-on experience in pixel art, music production, game development, and user experience design while working in real production pipelines. Player analytics and community feedback are used as creative tools, teaching participants how to iterate, test ideas, and build responsive digital experiences.
The result is a living digital artwork that evolves over time. It's part game, part classroom, part public exhibition. It invites players to explore Portland and its community, while supporting the next generation of creative technologists.
